PCIe 7.0 Specifications Finalized
The PCI Special Interest Group, or PCI-SIG has announced its completion of the specifications for PCIe 7.0. The new framework means PCI-SIG members, including chip manufacturers such as Intel, NVidia and AMD can begin to draw up plans for new products supporting the standard.
The finalization will likely usher in significantly more powerful performance, including 128 GT/S per-lane data transfer rates (four times the existing limits for PCIe 5.0, and twice as high the likely vaporware PCIe 6.0 theoretical rates), more efficient power usage, higher performance over copper wires and support for optical connections.
Part of PCI-SIG’s announcement also included early plans for drafting PCIe 8.0.
While the announcement represents a large step in hardware, consumers should expect to see new PCIe 7.0 hardware between 2028 and 2029, but unfortunately, setbacks can occur.
