Running MacOS on an Intel Mac? Don't Upgrade Monterey (Yet.)

A significant number of Mac owners are finding that the latest MacOS version is rendering their computers unusable.

The latest version of MacOS, codenamed Monterey appears to have a number of issues running on Mac and MacBooks released between 2015 and 2020. While users have reported a wide range of problems post-update, the most concerning are those whose computers are no longer able to boot or be recovered via conventional means.

The issue seems largely, but not entirely due to firmware conflicts on Apple’s T2 Security Chip.

Despite the initial panic associated with a seemingly “bricked” computer, most devices have been proven recoverable using Apple’s Configurator utility, which can help resolve firmware conflicts.

Mac computers running the company’s newer proprietary M1 chips have no reported issues with the update. Unfortunately, many VFX studies have opted to not upgrade to the newer hardware until more compatible software is released.

Users are strongly discouraged from upgrading to MacOS Monterey without checking in with a tech support provider.
