Google’s upcoming security update to its Drive service may change or break previously existing URLs for shared files.
The update to Google Drive will occur on September 13, 2021. Google account administrators will be able to manually apply the security update by July 23, 2021, which will send users notifications of changes to their file URLs.
Users with account administrators who elect to not apply the update will receive notifications between July 26 and August 25, 2021 of changes to any shared files they own or manage.
While adding greater security measures to shared online resources will ideally provide a semblance of reassurance to account users and administrators alike, the changes to file URLs will likely cause some degree of disruption, especially for commonly used, updated, and edited files and documents.
