MagStor Announces the First Thunderbolt™ 5 Tape Storage Drive

The relatively small market for LTO tape readers got a new lease on life last month with MagStor’s announcement of a Thunderbolt™ 5-enabled device. Details are still scarce, but the release itself is significant for companies and organizations that rely on the LTO format for secure, extended offline shelf-life, high-capacity data storage.

MagStor has yet to release the exact specifications of the device, which is still pending certification with Apple and Intel, but businesses that rely on LTO tapes are eager to take advantage of Thunderbolt™ 5’s high data transfer rates.

“The new Thunderbolt 5 LTO drive is ideal for media professionals, IT specialists, and enterprise users who demand secure, high-capacity storage for their growing data needs. With its seamless integration into macOS and Windows environments, this latest innovation promises to deliver effortless workflows for backup, recovery, and long-term data preservation,” read MagStor’s press release.

The drive is expected to be released by the end of 2025.
