Apple Releases Three New Mac Models

While most tech pundits editorialized about whether Apple’s $3499 Vision Pro AR headset would be a flop or a revolutionary product on par with the company’s offerings (iMac, iPhone, iPod), the announcement of three new Macs due June 13 seems more likely to have an immediate impact on their customers.

The product release represents the final transition from Intel-based processors to its proprietary Apple Silicon chips, all of which boast higher speeds and greatly improved battery life.

Here’s a quick overview of each:

15-inch MacBook Air

The newly released models include a 15-inch MacBook Air M2, which comes with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, larger screen (2880 x 1864 at 224 pixels / inch) and six-speaker audio system. The system’s memory and storage start at eight and 256 gigabytes respectively, but can be upgraded to 24 gigabytes of memory and two terabytes of storage.

This model is virtually identical to the 13” model, with the exception of a larger screen and speakers. The weight for both is roughly 2.7 lbs., but this figure varies based on configuration and manufacturing process.

The prices range from $1299 to $2499, depending on memory and storage.

M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio

The new model of Mac Studio boasts the M2 Max and Ultra chip options. M2 Ultra is effectively a doubling up of the Max M2 chips . The new Studios offer a range of power from 12-core CPU/30-core GPU/16-core Neural Engine to 24-core CPU/76-core GPU/32-core Neural Engine. Standard off-the-shelf models start with 32GB(Max) and 64GB(Ultra) of memory maxing out at 96GB for the Max Model and 192 GB for the Ultra model.

Perhaps most impressive about the new Studio model is its support for multiple displays: eight at 4K resolution, six at 6K resolution, or three at 8K.

The cost of the Studio starts at $1999 for Max models, up to $5399.00 fully loaded, and $3999 for Ultra models, topping out at $8799 for maximum processor power, storage and memory.

M2 Ultra Mac Pro

The Ultra Mac Pro phases out the final Intel-based Mac model. It will feature many of the same tech specs as the Ultra Max Studio , with greater capacity for expansion; six PCI Express gen 4 slots and eight Thunderbolt 4 ports. The desktop towers will cost a minimum of $6999, with a fully decked-out one setting you back $12,199 (our condolences to those who bought the Intel-based Mac Pro that topped out at over $53,000).

Although Apple has a tendency to market every new model as a game-changer, its latest line of releases does offer enhancements in performance at a comparable price point to other models. At least until the next WWDC.
